ReplyDeleteI feel that the education provided by our IITs are highly subsidized and the students should do something to pay their debt to the tax payer.
One of the arguments posed by these IIT graduates is that they do not have the research opportunities and funding here in India where as they usually migrate to the USA, land up in Massacheussets, Yale or Harvard where they get funded for their PhD programs and get excellent stipends. An Indian PhD student earns anywhere between 12000 to 25000. A call centre agent with a B COM degree earns more than that!!
But is that an excuse?? It is very very difficult to say. Most IIT students belong to middle class families, who claim that they have the RIGHT to pursue opportunities in greener pastures, send money back to their retired parents and also enjoy life the way they never could with their father's income.
They have worked hard while the richer brats in private engineering colleges were flashing high end mobile phones and enjoying the 'binge nights'. ( Not that they dont have fun at the IITs)
But all the same...as the classical keynesian economist says," There is no such thing as a free lunch", they simply cant get away with any excuse.
Someone has spent money on their education. it is the tax payer. They need to return it. The government should compusalrily employ them for 5 years in our DRDOs, other R&D centres and also give them some sort of specialized training so that they dont feel that they have wasted 5 precious years. Probably an MTech or similar degree would provide some sort of compensation for the years they have put in.
The governmnet can also try and increase the stipend/salary so that they dont revolt or end up being disgruntled. That can be counter productive. If the govenrment does this part really well, who knows some of them may not even quit at the end of 5 years and may choose to stay on!!
In the end,I feel that this shoouldnt be a unilateral decision by the government. A body comprising of the IIT board, student representatives, representatives of the HRD ministry and IIT Alumni should come to a consensus, taking all aspects into consideration.

yes. so is the case with IIMs/NITs. there has to be some accountability from those seeking subsidized world class education from A+ category Govt funded institutions...guys graduating frm IITs/NITs can also be a part of the technical wings of the Armed forces!
